Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

How to Identify

Poor circulation causes damage to peripheral nerves that control motor and sensory functions and can lead numbness and sometimes pain in hands, feet and legs. People with diabetes can develop many foot problems. Since nerves to the feet are the longest in the body, they are most often affected by neuropathy. Foot ulcers can develop over time, and if not treated properly, they can become infected resulting in amputation.

Diabetes is a disorder of the body's metabolism, in which beta cells of the pancreas are unable to produce sufficient insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps deliver glucose to cells to give them energy. Without insulin, too much glucose stays in the blood. Over time, high blood glucose can lead to serious problems with blood circulation, the heart, eyes, feet, kidneys, nerves, gums, and teeth.

Nerve damage is the direct result of poor circulation. Diabetes causes blood vessels of the feet and legs to narrow and harden and impedes blood flow to the feet. Your feet are less able to fight infection and to heal. Many with diabetes also suffer from artery disease, which reduces blood flow to the feet.

Without proper foot care, a small cut that does not heal turns into an ulcer that may become infected and gangrenous. To avoid spreading of gangrene and infection, doctors may need to amputate the foot. Happy Feet® insoles improve circulation and accelerate the healing process.
